European Project Semester is a program offered by eight European universities in seven countries throughout Europe to third year university/college students. EPS is created with engineering students in mind, but other students are also welcome.
It
is crafted to address the design requirements of the degree and
prepare engineering students with all the necessary skills to
face the challenges of today’s world economy.
Classes are offered to students in a cohort format; that is
students participating in EPS meet together as a group each day
to build their engineering design skills in class and then
meet
in teams of 2-5 students to work on their design projects.
International student teams work on interdisciplinary projects
with commercial businesses and industries, carefully selected to
match the students’ specializations and capabilities as well as
to develop their intercultural communication and teamwork
skills.
Since the start in 1994, EPS has become a huge success. Today seven institutions in Denmark, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain and Germany cooperate closely to offer EPS programs. Other institutions outside of the network have also shown interest, so there will probably be even more EPS programs on offer in the future.

Dr. Arvid Andersen was the originator of the EPS concept. He developed the program in Helsingør, Denmark with six students. A few years later, EPS later moved to the Copenhagen School of Engineering where nearly 70 students enroll in EPS each semester. Dr. Andersen is now retired from the university, lives in Copenhagen, and actively participates in international engineering education throughout the European Union. Dr. Andersen recently delivered a speech to the Proceedings of the First Ibero-American Symposium of Project Approaches in Engineering Education (PAEE´2009) accompanied with an abstract for publication and PowerPoint presentation on Project Management and Teamwork.

Tarbes, France
EPS is offered at Ecole Nationale d’Ingénieurs, ENIT, in
Tarbes. ENIT is a member of the French ENI Engineering
Network. A strong characteristic of ENIT is its close ties with
industry. Internships, industrial projects, and final-year
projects, which are included in the curriculum, provide the
opportunity to spend long periods of time working with industry.
ENIT produces multi-skilled engineers who, due to their broad
training experience, can work in any field of engineering and in
any industry.
ENIT is located in the medium-sized town of Tarbes in the south
of France. Tarbes is a gateway to the Pyrenees mountain range
which is a gorgeous natural border between France and Spain.

Kiel, Germany
As the largest
University of Applied Sciences in Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel has
an important role both with the city and within the region: it
is an attractor for, and supporter of, incoming and outgoing
specialisms and expertise in the full range of industries: from
computer and multi-media to heavy engineering to agriculture,
from banking and business services to social services. Included
in this are the many successful international partnerships that
have been built up over the past decade or so: both academic and
professional.
The EPS at Kiel University of Applied Sciences is hosted by the
Department of Mechanical Engineering; supporting the projects’
organisation and provision of services and facilities; such as
human resources.
Another important institution for students is the huge
experienced International Office, which will assist in any
matter of student support.

s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands
EPS is offered at University of Applied Sciences of Avans Hogeschool (Avans University) which is a recently combined university of three former universities located at Tilburg, Brede, and s-Hertogenbosch (den Bosch). The Dutch live in a tiny country. Most of them speak English. They are mostly a trading nation, relying on the rest of the world for trade, so it is in their interest to get to know and understand other cultures. Studying at a Dutch university gives you the opportunity to benefit from the exploration the Dutch have been doing for so many centuries now. The Netherlands is a very centrally located country close to Germany, England and France. While attending EPS at Avans, you will live in ‘s-Hertogenbosch shortened to Den Bosch which means "of the woods". Den Bosch is a 700-year-old city located about an hour away from Amsterdam. Students from the United States fly into Amsterdam's famous Schipol airport and take the train from Schipol to central Amsterdam where they transfer to a train to Den Bosch. Trains run often and regularly to Den Bosch and throughout the Netherlands.
